Guide Through The Maelstrom
by Saul Trabal
He promises the moon
She promises the stars
Both are vague on travel so far
Mapping that voyage is no easy feat
Queries on said trip met with diversions and deceit
Candidates work hard to win people's trust
The warping of truth and lies is a must
Half truths breed hope, distractions provide cover
Working to twist suspicions asunder
People want things to better their mood
Rich ones desire bulging coffers of gold
Poor ones crave bulging bellies of food
Persecuted from afar want shelter from the scythe
Persecuted from within wish the freedom to strive
Candidates lock horns in a vicious fight
Aware that as captain they wield fearsome might
The fate of millions at their whim
Whom want a ship captain to steer through the din
The populace battles amongst themselves
Zealotry and passion creating cavernous wells
Emotions fueling tempests of black and white
A savage clash of the left and the right
Their bloodletting and votes will determine the victor
A captain whose followers will be the predictor
Of fates far and near, whose lives thrive and fail
Via their captain's guiding the ship's mighty sail
The route in flux, seas churning and twisting
The ship battles forth, ever bobbing and listing
Will it reach its destination? Will it crash on the shore?
The captain must determine all this and much more
Some passengers will cheer, while others decry
The ship captain's course viewed as seamless or awry
The pages of history will ultimately tell all
Of a nation's successes or its tragic downfall
