The Equalizing Agent

by Saul Trabal

The richest tycoon, the impoverished drifter
Dissimilar styles defining each actor
The makeup they wear a sign of their status
Their insides display how trifling the canvas

Human beings all, despite their difference
The alpha creature, conceited existence
Its place assured, or so they think
Such apes can be smitten with but a wink

The fossil records chronicle all
Extinction of creatures great and small

Invisible to eyes
Cast down from the sky
A mountain's tempest, a volcanic blaze
Each species extinguished in various ways

A hurricane of ruin, a dance of decay
Snuffed out in an instant, versus fading away

Blind to this history
Humanity plows on
Filled with certainty
Of the oncoming dawn

Oblivious of Nature
Ignoring the big picture
Too focused on goals
Mapped out on scrolls

The apes must take care
Staying very aware
Of their fleeting existence
Nature's dogged persistence

A transient species
Noble gods they are not
Subjected to finality
Subjugated to rot

Civilization to the fore
Man achieving so much more
Yet Nature can erase
All such schemes from Earth's face
