Trail Of The Pariah

by Saul Trabal

Leaving places of death and ruin
Driven to countries of fortunes more certain
Lands of legend bearing milk and honey
Travel to them bought with hard earned money

Families together
People alone
Perilous journey to a blessed new home

No pity for travelers
Regardless of age
Surviving or dying
Sheer luck is their gauge
Driven across deserts by foot and by tire
A better life for themselves to acquire

Guides insist they steer them right
Yet unfortunates are lost to the night
Sickness, murder and misery
Await each traveler, testing their bravery

Successful travel a roll of the dice
Losers die away, their flesh shall entice
Creatures of all kinds
Such delights will suffice

Rumors from those who have traveled before them
Tales of success, madness and mayhem
The rewards and dangers of working hard
Buying a new home, being turned into lard
Their brown skin a hinderance
Amongst legions of white
Their poverty an annoyance
To be driven out of sight

Leaders of these lands
Tired of the flow
These travelers constantly on the go
Harassed and terrorized, round up at first chance
To scare other travelers and halt their advance

Lands of the free
Homes for the brave
More tall tales
Driving the great migrant wave

Success and failure
Fates constantly mutating
The travelers push forward
Each victory a blessing

Luck is tenuous
Of this they're aware
Continually conscious
Of this perilous thoroughfare
